街头少年钱继东（丁子俊 饰）自幼崇拜“旺角双鹰”之一的蒲俊（任达华 饰），私人他的父亲因欠西洋仔（雷宇扬饰）的高利贷被打，私人钱继东遂找西洋仔拼命，为父亲出气，却被西洋仔擒获。危急关头，蒲俊出现受钱继东为自己的手下，救了他一条姓名，从此钱继东跟着蒲俊闯荡江湖。但钱继东的女友GIGI（黎姿饰）不喜欢他混迹于黑社会，苦劝无效，终于与之分手。西洋仔用卑鄙手段当上了社团的龙头老大，他夺取了蒲俊的生意，又把子杰害死。蒲俊激愤之下又发现唯一在自己身边的钱继东竟是警方派来的卧底，蒲俊赶走了钱继东，单枪匹马找西洋仔谈判，结果被西洋仔抓住，这时，放弃了女朋友和警察身份的钱继东赶到，与蒲俊联手作战，火拼西洋仔……

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
