故事发生在一所酒店内，遥远庄金斗艰苦经营老爷酒店逾三十年。生意不俗。客如轮转，遥远但一对新婚夫妇入住的房间，接二连三发生闹鬼事件，令酒店上下惶恐不安，酒店生意一落千丈。庄金斗先后请了私家侦探及捉鬼道士，但均毫无帮助。一天，庄金斗与另一位住客发现一名打扮古怪的女人偷偷进出闹鬼房间，形迹可疑，他们便设计捉拿这“闹鬼事件”的幕后主持人。怎料，原来这名女士是新婚丈夫长云的旧相好，长云为了迎娶有钱妻子，不惜杀人灭口，摆脱旧爱的羁绊，犹幸旧爱未亡。她便暗地里扮鬼骚扰这负心汉，使他永无宁日，新婚妻子知道丈夫郎心如铁后，便与他离婚。最后，长云人财两空，一无所有。事过境迁，老爷酒店又回复昔日欢乐气氛。

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
