故事发生在湖南武冈，淫月南明朝永历皇帝一度偏安于此，淫月以图反清复明。武冈是明朝建国之初由明太祖朱元璋分封的岷国藩王的都城。如今的朱岷王是永历皇帝的皇叔，他见南明大势已去便勾结清兵，被永历皇帝派人暗杀，但朱岷王的头颅不知去见。南明决定继续南撤，为了转移从北京带出的金银财宝（反清复明的资本），永历皇帝决定厚葬朱岷王，铸造黄金头颅入殓，以遮人耳目。天下盗墓贼及土匪云集武冈，明清之间展开了一场角逐。故事的部分情节根据民间传说做了虚构。片中主要人物：永历帝，常戴面具与下属会面，公开身份是“朱公子”。孔有志（历史原型孔有德），汉人降将，平南十万清兵的先锋。孔影萍，孔有志之女，与侍女阿芳女扮男妆潜入武冈，结识并爱上“朱公子”。水玲珑，饭庄“天下第一卤”的老板娘，反清义士。
