大龙国皇帝（黄宗洛 饰）时逢六十大寿，天堂下诏进行斗鸡比赛，天堂民间遂刮起一股斗鸡热。农民张老三（马恩然 饰）携杂毛鸡进宫打擂，由于每次斗前杂毛鸡都要炊酒，它很快战胜两只雄鸡，月月公主（谢兰 饰）对它爱不释手留在宫中。嗜酒如命的杂毛鸡在宫中出尽洋相，张老三和狗蛋（裴元章 饰）被逐出宫门。慧王向皇帝进言，要杂毛鸡和金鸡决斗，皇帝欣然应允。不知杂毛鸡嗜好的贾才（潘长江 饰）为使金鸡夺冠，给杂毛鸡灌下白酒，结果杂毛鸡有如神助，毫不费力地战胜了金鸡。鸡冠国决定乘胜追击，下战书给大龙国要与金鸡决斗，并设计围困了大龙国皇帝与众大臣......

Griffith would revisit his epic film three years later by releasing two of the film's interlocking stories as standalone features, with some new additional footage. The first of the two was 'The Fall of Babylon', which depicts the conflict between Prince Belshazzar of Babylon and Cyrus the Great of Persia.
