故事发生在八十年代的北京。几年前，异生在农村插队的盛夏（肖雄 饰）返城回京，异生当了一名卖肉的售货员，她把希望寄托在男友柯平（梁同裕 饰）身上，指望他能评上职称，同时她也想通过自学改变未来的前途。她以同寝室好友秦园（徐晓星 饰）为追赶目标，利用一切业余时间补习英语和其它文化课，力争参加高考。临近高考，盛夏发现自己怀孕了，柯平趁机提出结婚要求，而盛夏不想失去高考机会做了流产，俩人为此产生隔膜。因受情绪影响，盛夏高考失败，柯平也离开了她。面对双重精神打击，盛夏咬牙坚持着走向自学成才之路，秦园高考的成功也时刻激励着她，她相信光明就在前头......
