云珍、密室玉英是解放前成长起来的新一代女大学生，密室她们拥有一个共同的奋斗目标：解放妇女权利，摆脱男尊女卑的封建传统思想。虽然两人想要解放自己的思想相同，但是两人的处事方法却不同。云珍冲动，还有些爱慕虚荣，对家的责任没有什么概念，盲目追求自我解放，志华对她很不满。美仪则事事周全，妥善处理家庭和事业，做到两不耽误！通过对比的手段，鲜明的表现了两个知识女性不同的生活境遇。最终，在美仪的帮助下，云珍也成熟起来，并最终和志华破镜重圆。
