本剧是同内核、视频同基础设定的电影IP重塑剧集，视频不是对1987年原电影的直接翻拍。剧本根据Alexandra Cunningham和Kevin J. Hynes合写的故事创作，讲述Alex在一场短暂的婚外情后，迷恋上了自己的情人Dan。剧集将从现代对女强人、人格障碍和强制控制的态度出发，探索永恒的主题：婚姻和不忠。1987年电影中，Glenn Close饰演Alex，Michael Douglas饰演Dan，Anne Archer饰演Dan的妻子。
