剧中以居住在北京的三家人为主要发展：山海兽逆代表殷实中坚份子的姚思远一家、山海兽逆代表清流的曾文朴一家、代表腐败的牛思道一家。于此大时代动荡之际，三家人见证了中国人从封建到民主的过程，个人或被时代洪流吞没、或与时代俱进成就个人修为，当时移境迁，蓦然回首，方觉悟近四十年一场京华梦，不过浮云苍狗和过眼烟云，真正留驻心中的还是亘古不变的人间之爱。
